Jim Harbaugh heaps praise upon Chargers UDFA who's actually making his life harder

There are certainly worse problems to have than an undrafted rookie wideout turning heads.

The likelihood of undrafted rookie wide receiver Dalevon Campbell making the Los Angeles Chargers' 53-man roster is still relatively low at this point, but the 23-year-old has certainly given Jim Harbaugh plenty to think about over the last few weeks.

After spending six years at the collegiate level—three with Illinois (he redshirted as a true freshman), two with Nevada, and one with South Carolina—the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder was signed as an undrafted free agent in mid-May after a strong tryout at rookie camp.

After suffering some brutal drops in the early days of training camp, Campbell has been turning heads ever since, making several highlight-reel catches in practice and showcasing some incredible athleticism and leaping ability. He was so impressive, in fact, that he was even getting some first-team reps with the Bolts' offense in the week leading up to the Hall of Fame Game.

He made just one catch against the Detroit Lions in the preseason opener, but this past Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, he led all players with 62 receiving yards on three catches, 49 of which came on DJ Uiagalelei's lone pass of the game late in the Chargers' 27-13 victory. Campbell also caught a two-point conversion from Trey Lance in the third quarter.

Asked about Campbell's deep-ball grab in his postgame presser, Harbaugh couldn't help but be impressed, saying that's exactly what he's been doing since camp started.

"D-Camp, he's been doing that in practice," Harbaugh said. "I don't think any receiver has caught as many go balls as D-Camp. He's done a nice job, and that was a heck of a play he made on that ball."

That's some solid praise from Harbaugh for a guy who's actually making his job a little more challenging.

Jim Harbaugh has a tough decision ahead with the Chargers' 53-man roster

Again, the likelihood of Campbell landing a spot on the 53-man roster still seems a little low, as one would think the top six wideouts on the depth chart at this point would be Ladd McConkey, Keenan Allen, Tre' Harris, Quentin Johnston, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, and Derius Davis.

But also again, Campbell is undoubtedly giving Harbaugh a lot to think about in the coming weeks ahead of final cutdowns on Tuesday, August 26. If he doesn't make the roster, one would assume that he's guaranteed a spot on the practice squad. But one could also easily assume that plenty of other teams around the league have taken notice.

So, if Campbell is relegated to the practice squad in two weeks time, don't be surprised if somebody else snatches him up quickly.
