Chargers waste virtually no time making first roster cut of 2025

Well, that didn't take long.

The LA Chargers welcomed a long list of players to participate during rookie minicamp. Some were selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, some were signed as undrafted free agents, and some were welcomed as tryouts.

One of those tryouts officially made the roster on Monday as the Chargers signed wide receiver Dalevon Campbell. Campbell was invited to rookie minicamp after no team signed him as an undrafted free agent.

To make room for Campbell on the roster, the Chargers made their first roster cut of the year. Center Bucky Williams, who has been with the team since the start of the 2024 season, was released to make room for the minicamp tryout.

Chargers release Bucky Williams, sign Dalevon Campbell

Campbell played six years of college football, spending his senior season with South Carolina in the SEC. The six-foot-four wideout had a relatively quiet season stats wise as he finished with 312 yards on 12 catches in 12 games played.

What's notable about those numbers is the yards per reception. Campbell averaged an asinine 26 yards per catch for the Gamecocks last season. That was not an outlier, as over the course of his college career he averaged over 16 yards per reception.

Campbell is a tall, contested-catch merchant who will log snaps at X receiver during training camp and the preseason. The odds of him making the roster (without significant injuries ahead of him) is are virtually nonexistent, however, Campbell could impress enough to earn a spot on the Chargers practice squad.

There will be more room in the practice squad with Williams no longer in the fold. The Chargers signed Williams as an undrafted free agent last season but he never got a chance to play for the team (nor the practice squad).

Williams was placed on IR prior to last season and was never activated. That IR stint may have extended his tenure with the Chargers as this move may have happened much sooner. It's clear he was on the chopping block as he is the first player to go.
