The Los Angeles Chargers have been connected to a trade for a running back following some moving and shaking on their depth chart, and New York Jets star Breece Hall stands out as perhaps the best skill position player on the market.
Pure logic may dictate that the winless Jets will try to sell Hall quickly for any sort of draft compensation. However, such a move may not come to pass, much to the chagrin of Chargers fans.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn needs to start winning games, and a recent rash of injuries might put them in a position where they are going to resist the temptation of a draft pick in the name of putting a competitive product on the field.
Glenn, who said in the offseason that he was not interested in trading Hall, has reaffirmed that trade rumors involving Hall are nothing more than just rumors. The Jets might not budge from their stance on Hall unless the Chargers pay well above market value for his services.
Chargers may miss out on Breece Hall after latest comments from Jets
With Garrett Wilson and backup RB Braelon Allen nursing injuries, a Jets team that is the only winless squad in the NFL likely won't be able to convince their locker room that they are putting a competitive product on the field with Isaiah Davis as RB1 and Josh Reynolds as WR1. Glenn needs to win games, and he would like Hall along to help.
If the Jets do relent, however, the Chargers might be able to bring him to town. A fourth-round pick seems like the going rate for a pending free agent, but the Chargers may need to get into the third-round range if they are serious about adding one of the best young backs in the AFC.
With Omarion Hampton coming back from injury relatively soon and Kimani Vidal looking to be an upgrade over the injured Najee Harris, the Chargers may not be so strived for talent in this area that they get into the Day 2 range, even conditionally, for a player who will likely demand around 20 touches every game.
Hall and Hampton could make for a nightmarish 1-2 punch the Chargers could ride to a playoff appearance, and possible more. However, the Jets don't have to trade him, and they wil have plenty of suitors. The Chargers' chances of getting him are shrinking by the day.
