At this point in the offseason, most teams across the NFL simply have minor, peripheral moves left on their docket. The same is true for the Los Angeles Angeles Chargers, who spent the entire offseason, including the 2026 NFL Draft, replenishing their depth across the board.

But as we sit two weeks away from training camp, their biggest offseason mystery remains unanswered. Will Keenan Allen return, and if he does, what sort of role will he be granted in a Chargers offense that seems to have moved on from his possession skill-set?

Keenan Allen remains a free agent just two weeks away from training camp

For the most part, the Chargers' roster is complete— especially on the offensive side of the ball. Los Angeles replenished its offensive-line depth in the Draft, adding Jake Slaughter to compete for the starting left guard spot and tacking on Travis Burke, Logan Taylor, and Alex Harkey in the later rounds.

With the additions of Brenen Thompson, Keaton Mitchell, David Njoku, and Charlie Kolar as additional playmakers/blockers, the Chargers, for the first time in recent memory, are replete with weapons. But as we approach training camp, their primary pass-catching weapon from 2025 remains on the open market.

In Greg Roman's run-heavy, play action-focused scheme, Allen was a security blanket of sorts for Justin Herbert. When the pressure was closing in and Herbert needed a quick outlet, Allen was almost always open somewhere in the short or intermediate parts of the field. Across 17 games last season, he posted 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns. He was narrowly beat out by Ladd McConkey as the team's leading receiver, but he felt like the first option for most of the year in terms of the team's offensive gameplan.

Allen has stated that, at this point in his career, he doesn't want to play anywhere outside of Los Angeles. Chargers GM Joe Hortiz stated earlier this offseason that the door is open for Allen's return, and the two parties are in communication.

If Allen does come back, it likely won't be until training camp is well underway. But until a decision is finalized, we won't have a fully crystallized picture of Los Angeles' pass-catching hierarchy.

If he returns, his role will be minimal

If Allen does return, one thing is certain— he will no longer be the primary receiving option for the Chargers offense. Mike McDaniel's West Coast-style scheme focuses on stretching the field horizontally and seeking out YAC opportunities with quick-timing throws.

It's not as though Allen doesn't have the skill to be productive in that sort of scheme. But he's best suited as a possession receiver at this point in his career, and Los Angeles' other weapons are much more viable in that regard. Expect the offensive attention to focus on McConkey this season regardless of Allen's status.

But Allen's return could still have implications for the way targets are distributed among the Chargers' receivers. While McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Tre' Harris all seem to be locked in as key pieces of the offense, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Brenen Thompson will need to fight to see the field consistently in 2026.

Allen could quickly displace either of those two receivers in the offensive hierarchy, or he could simply serve as a veteran presence, on an extremely limited snap count, for a young receivers room.

The fact of the matter is that we simply won't know until the Chargers and Allen come to a final decision. At this point in the offseason, it's the biggest mystery that looms over Los Angeles.
