After practicing against each other this past week, the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints meet in the third week of the preseason.

Usually considered the most important preseason game, Week 3 has traditionally been used as a “dress rehearsal” for the regular season. With that being said, we can expect to see the starters on the field longer than we have to this point.

How long we see them will be up to coach Anthony Lynn and many fans might prefer to see them as little as possible to prevent any major injuries from occuring before the season kicks off. This is something every team has to balance, but no team has had to deal with the amount of injuries that the Chargers have over the last couple of seasons.

However, if Philip Rivers takes the offense down the field and gets seven points, that might satisfy Lynn. On defense, getting to the quarterback and perhaps forcing a turnover would be a welcome sight.

The Saints are considered one of the best teams in the NFC. After reaching the divisional round and being one play away from the conference championship game, they are a trendy pick to get at least that far this season.

It makes for a nice challenge for the Chargers, who will have to deal with Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram. When the Bolts have the ball, they’ll have to go against what was the league’s No. 17 overall defense a year ago.

Once the starters leave the field, there are several players who will be looking to make an impression to make this team. Some players to keep an eye on are Detrez Newsome, Geremy Davis and Artavis Scott. It would also be nice to see one of the tight ends finally make a play.

It will also be an important night for placekicker Caleb Sturgis.
