And with the 3rd selection of the 2016 draft the San Diego Chargers select…

Tom Telesco has always kept things pretty close, but this year he has done an exceptional job.  I have no inkling of what the Chargers might do.  I have some ideas of what I would do, but I’m not sure what TT has up his sleeve.  So here are my 3 scenarios for how this might play out tomorrow.

And with the 3rd selection of the 2016 draft the San Diego Chargers select…

The Jalen Ramsey Draft1. S – Jalen Ramsey2. DT – Vernon Butler / Kenny Clark / Austin Johnson.3. C – Max Tuerk / Nick Martin4. G – Connor McGovern.

This draft is my favorite of the 3.  Ramsey will be a playmaker for years to come.  He fills the hole that was left when Weddle signed on with the Ravens.  With the first 3 picks the Chargers fill their 3 biggest needs with quality players who can step in and start on Day 1.  Waiting until the second for DT is a prudent move in a draft that is loaded with DTs.  The first two picks bring two playmakers to the defensive unit of the Chargers which struggled immensely last year.

The Laremy Tunsil Draft1. OT – Laremy Tunsil2. DT – Vernon Butler / Kenny Clark / Austin Johnson.3. C – Max Tuerk / Nick Martin4. S – Miles Kellebrew/ DeAndre Houston-Carson

While this draft solidifies River’s blindside protection, creates immediate depth on the O-line and shores up the D-Line that struggled immensely last year, it fails to address the many needs on the defensive side of the ball.  Taking a safety at 4 will give the Chargers a player to groom for the future meaning Lowry is your day one starter for the Chargers.  While that is not the end of the world, it makes me a bit nervous.

The Trade Back DraftSo it happens.  Jacksonville decides it can not live without Jalen Ramsey and pulls the trigger on a deal with the Chargers.  Jacksonville sends its 1st and 3rd round picks to the Chargers for the #3 pick.1. DT – D’Forest Buckner2. S – Vonn Bell/Keanu Neal3. C – Max Tuerk / Nick Martin3. ILB – Scooby Wright III4. G – Connor McGovern.

The Chargers pick up another selection in the draft which gives them a pick to bolster ILB position which currently lacks depth.  Buckner is a beast and will make the Chargers line a formidable unit, something it has not been in many years. I can’t say I would be bummed by this draft, but Ramsey is an interesting product.  Skipping on him might leave the Chargers kicking themselves for years to come if he turns out to be the superstar that many are projecting him to become.
