Chargers defense will have to prove itself against Lions

I can’t believe that the season is less than a week away! The first challenge that the San Diego Chargers have is against the Detroit Lions. This will be a tough test for the defense that still has a lot of things to prove. The defense looked good in the preseason, but that is all just preseason work up to this point and none of that stuff counts now. We need to see the guys step it up during a game.

The Lions have plenty of options that we need to slow down on their offense. Calvin Johnson will be the toughest player to slow. We have some tiny tots at the corner spot. Calvin will be towering over them and will be looking to make an impact down the field. It will be up to Brandon Flowers and Jason Verrett to prevent all that noise from happening. Our corners might not have the size, but they have the ability to contain him.

The Chargers will have to get a lot of pressure on Matthew Stafford in order to get the ball out of his hands quicker than he would like to force him into mistakes. Melvin Ingram showed a good pass rush in the preseason. His ability to get to the quarterback will make a huge impact in the game. Kyle Emanuel could also play a huge part in the game with his pass rushing ability. John Pagano will have to dial up different ways to get to Stafford.

The Chargers can’t shift all their coverage to Megatron since their is another legit option for Stafford to toss to with Golden Tate on the opposite side. Tate is another impact player that knows how to make people miss and can also lay down some god blocks for the running game. He has great hands and knows how to get open. The secondary will be busy.

The run defense will have to prepare for Ameer Abdullah. The rookie showed a lot of promise entering into the league and shined on a few plays in the preseason. He is a shifty runner and can make people miss. The Chargers will have to secure their tackles when he gets the ball.

This first game will be a challenge for this unproven defense. We will learn a lot about this defense by the end of the day.
