Should the San Diego Chargers consider adding Knowshon Moreno to the roster?
Should the San Diego Chargers consider adding Knowshon Moreno onto the roster? If the Chargers have an interest in a running back that is coming off of an ACL injury, like Todd Gurley, then they might as well go with a running back that has worked in Mike McCoy’s system in the past. They might as well go with a running back that could come over cheap and give the team solid reps as the starter.
Knowshon Moreno is a free agent. He is one of the best running back option that is available on the market and he is someone that could make an impact if given the chance. He wouldn’t be the answer for the team for the long-term, but he could be brought in to fight for a role on the roster and likely would be fighting to take a bulk of the carries. There are a number of running backs that will be available in the draft that can help the Chargers. Moreno has shown that he can run McCoy’s offense. He probably could compete with Donald Brown and push him off of the depth chart.
Adding Moreno onto the roster would give the team more depth at the running back position and the team could keep their priorities on another position at the top of the draft. A number of experts have the Chargers selecting Melvin Gordon or Todd Gurley in the first round, but the team should keep their focus on another position with all the depth at the running back position in the draft. Adding Moreno makes the position less of a priority for the team going into the draft.
The team could still take a running back in the 2nd or 3rd round and that player would get to compete for the starting role with Moreno when they came into camp. Competition will bring out the best of everyone. Moreno is not going to cost much. He didn’t cost much last season and he should be even cheaper now that he is returning from injury.
I don’t know what the market is for Moreno at the moment, but if he wants to sign a short deal that is incentive filled, then I would be all over it. I would bring him in and let him compete for playing time. He does know how to run that running play out of the shotgun.
