The early stages of free agency haven't been particularly exciting for the LA Chargers. Los Angeles has made moves around the fringes despite entering the offseason with $100 million in cap space, as general manager Joe Hortiz does not want to operate at the top of the free-agent market.
This has resulted in several fan favorites, such as Zion Johnson and Odafe Oweh, leaving the team already. That list may continue to grow as Hortiz values compensatory picks and won't overbid for his own players if another team is in the market.
That potentially could happen with veteran safety Tony Jefferson, who had yet another great season with the Chargers in 2025 and certainly earned a deal to return in 2026. The Chargers don't seem to view Jefferson as valuable as the fanbase does, though, with the veteran safety saying as much on social media.
A fan asked Jefferson if the Chargers had offered him a contract yet on Tuesday morning. Jefferson's response does not paint the Chargers in a good light.
"Brother I’m not signing nothing that doesnt [sic] have guaranteed money in it. Thats a fact," Jefferson said on X. "im [sic] done with the he has no value approach I clearly proved that’s not true"
Tony Jefferson not happy with Chargers' contract offers
Jefferson appears to have a reasonable request after his two strong seasons in Los Angeles: guaranteed money. According to him, the Chargers haven't offered that to this point, or at least haven't offered as much as he would have hoped for.
After a one-year retirement that included working with Hortiz was a scouting assistant in Baltimore, the Chargers brought Jefferson in for a workout prior to the 2024 season. Jefferson signed a non-guaranteed deal, played well in the preseason, and landed a spot on the practice squad.
Jefferson played eight toal games for the Chargers in 2024 and showed enough for the Bolts to re-sign him in 2025 to a one-year deal with only $25,000 guaranteed, according to Over The Cap. He didn't make the initial 53-man roster and was signed to the practice squad.
Injuries and the eventual Alohi Gilman trade forced Jefferson into a bigger role, where he thrived. He played 13 total games for the Bolts in 2025, starting eight, and picked off four passes. He was a key glue guy who held Jesse Minter's secondary together.
Yet despite all this, according to Jefferson himself, the Chargers are not offering him a respectable guaranteed contract for the 2026 season. That can change, especially after Jefferson's public pressure, but it might also be an indication of an inevitable departure.
Re-signing Jefferson isn't going to break the bank. He knows the stage of his career he is at and has said as much. Hopefully, the Chargers smarten up and give him the affordable, fully guaranteed contract he has earned after the last two seasons.
