The real reason Tony Jefferson re-signed with the Chargers is clear as day

It's pretty obvious.

It's always good news when a fan favorite returns to the team. Veteran safety Tony Jefferson agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract to return to the LA Chargers after being an impact player for the Bolts in 2025.

There were some concerns about Jefferson's future earlier in the offseason when he blatantly called out the Chargers on social media. Jefferson made it clear he wasn't going to accept non-guaranteed money from the Chargers and insinuated that is all the team offered him. Something budged, as Jefferson is back in LA.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the news and also made it pretty clear why Jefferson returned to the Chargers in the first place. Schultz highlighted Jefferson's relationship to new defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary, which definitely has more weight behind it than meets the eye.

Chris O'Leary was the key for the Chargers to re-sign Tony Jefferson

Schultz isn't just mentioning Jefferson's relationship to O'Leary for the fun of it. As an insider, Schultz is fed information from his sources not only about the moves but why the moves happen. The fact he specifically posted this probably means it came from Jefferson's camp.

It's the same reason why some players always get complimentary descriptions from insiders when they report the news. Those descriptions are fed to the insiders from the agents, who are the ones who fed the breaking news to the insider in the first place.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to Chargers fans. Jefferson has been very complimentary of O'Leary in the past, even calling him a future defensive coordinator well before casual fans knew who he was.

O'Leary directly coached Jefferson as the team's safety coach when Jefferson came out of retirement in 2024. He left to be a defensive coordinator in college before returning to the Bolts this offseason to replace Jesse Minter.

There were some concerns that Minter would lure Jefferson back to Baltimore because of their relationship both on the Chargers and both of their first stints in Baltimore. Theoretically, Jefferson could have replaced the departing Alohi Gilman, who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

It's unclear whether or not Minter wanted that reunion with Jefferson, but the Chargers obviously did. The veteran safety is back for at least one more season and fans can directly thank O'Leary for that.

Hopefully, O'Leary can continue the momentum that Minter started with Jefferson and produce another successful season in what is a great season for the defense as a whole.
