The Carolina Panthers were handed the most embarrassing loss of the NFL Week 1 slate while the LA Chargers managed to avenge their own embarrassing loss to a division rival from last season. For Panthers fans, the season already seems over while Chargers fans are excited for the future with Jim Harbaugh.

If the Chargers are going to be a playoff team in Harbaugh's first year as head coach then they have to beat a Panthers team that is projected to be one of the worst in the league. And if the Panthers want to beat those projections, the team cannot start 0-2 with two ugly losses.

Neither team has massive widespread appeal for casual NFL fans so the coverage map for this Week 2 matchup is rather tiny. However, those who can tune into the game are likely wondering who is calling the game, both in the booth and on the field.

Announcers for Chargers vs. Panthers:

  • Network: CBS
  • Play-by-play: Tom McCarthy
  • Color commentary: Jay Feely
  • Sideline reporter: Amanda Balionis

Tom McCarthy, Jay Feely and Amanda Balionis will be on the call for CBS. McCarthy is well known in the Philadelphia area as he is the play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jay Feely is a former NFL kicker who played over a decade in the league. Feely played collegiately at the University of Michigan but his time with the Wolverines did not intersect with Harbaugh.

Amanda Balionis is most well-known for her golf coverage dating back to 2011. Balionis has covered both the NFL and college football for CBS.

Referees for Chargers vs. Panthers

Brad Rogers is the head referee for the Chargers-Panthers matchup in Week 1. Rogers was the head referee for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Atlanta Falcons game in Week 1, which had 14 penalties called between the two teams.

Rogers has been a head referee since the 2019 season. In 2023, home teams had their highest-ever winning percentage in games Rogers called. Home teams were 14-3 in games Rogers officiated last season.

The rest of the crew that will be calling the game with Rogers is as followed (via Football Zebras):

  • Umpire: Bryan Neale
  • Down Judge: Kent Payne
  • Line Judge: Kevin Codey
  • Side Judge: Anthony Jeffries
  • Field Judge: Joe Blubaugh
  • Back Judge: Greg Yette

Because NFL referees are part-time, many of them have other jobs outside of their officiating duties. Codey is a middle school physical education teacher, Blubaugh is a regional sales manager, and Rogers is a college professor.
