We are at the point in the 2024 offseason when NFL analysts and experts are making record predictions for the season ahead, much to the disappointment of many fans. Those records don't bring much excitement for teams like the Chargers, who are in a division predominately owned by one team.
So that makes the latest predictions from The 33rd Team even worse.
As expected, they project the Super Bowl Champions to reign supreme in the AFC West, with the Chargers and Raiders tying for second place with a below .500 record.
Latest record predictions paint Chargers to be a joke in 2024
Although most LA fans are looking at the season through a realistic lens, recognizing they are unlikely destined for a deep postseason run this year, the idea that they'll only win two more games than last season seems a bit harsh.
If this were a team still coached by Brandon Staley, perhaps The 33rd Team wouldn't be too far off. But with all the changes the team has made this offseason, most notably bringing in Jim Harbaugh, there's a hope they'll win closer to nine or ten games than this projection.
It feels like this is negating all of the positive moves made this offseason and their easier-than-expected schedule. Taking both of those factors into account should warrant a better record, but perhaps the belief is that the departures of Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler, and Mike Williams will have a bigger impact on the offense than most want to admit.
Hopefully, that's not the case because the Chargers have been waiting for their time to shine for far too long. Even if the 2024 season isn't time for that yet, only improving on the season by two games feels like a massive disappointment.
We won't know if this is in the team's future until a regular-season game is played, but we'll get a better understanding of how they look during the rest of OTAs and training camp, which is coming up soon.
Fingers crossed, they look better than what some are anticipating.
