Justin Herbert gives Chargers fans injury scare after worrisome hit vs. Panthers
By Jason Reed
The LA Chargers were cruising to a victory against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2012. Then the entire season flashed before every fans' eyes, as Justin Herbert was awkwardly hit as he stepped up in the pocket to attempt a pass.
Herbert was hit both up high and down low and folded onto the Panthers' defenders below him. The star quarterback was slow to get up, prompting the Chargers' medical staff to come out to the field and assist him to the sideline.
Herbert walked to the sideline under his power after he fumbled. However, he was very obviously shaken up, which is something to monitor after his preseason foot injury.
The hit that caused Herbert to gingerly leave the field of play can be seen below:
Chargers training staff worked on Justin Herbert's ankle on the sideline
Trainers were seen working on Herbert's lower right leg on the sideline after he exited the game. This is the same side as his foot injury from the preseason but it is unclear at this time if the two things are related.
CBS Sideline reporter Amanda Balionis did specifically say the medical staff was working on Herbert's right calf/ankle/heel area, so there could be a correlation from the previous injury. More information will be available after the game.
Herbert quickly went into the blue medical tent after his ankle was getting worked on by trainers on the sideline. However, the star quarterback emerged from the medical tent shortly thereafter before the Panthers' ensuing drive was over.
The star quarterback did not miss a snap for the Chargers and was back under center for the ensuing drive. Herbert did not come back to the field with any kind of limp and he was not favoring the foot at all.
The Chargers handed the ball off on the first play of the drive before heading to the third quarter. If there are more updates around Herbert's status in the game itself this article will be updated accordingly.
