Update: Michigan defensive line coach Mike Elston is also expected to join Jim Harbaugh's staff on the Chargers, per Tom Pelissero.
After weeks of speculation Jim Harbaugh made the decision that seemed obvious the entire time: to be the next head coach of the LA Chargers. All the stars aligned for the Chargers to hire Harbaugh, who now looks to build a new culture in Los Angeles.
Harbaugh is not going to build that new culture alone as he is working alongside new general manager Joe Hortiz. Harbaugh and Hortiz are already filling out the rest of Harbaugh's staff with several prominent names getting jobs under Harbaugh.
More coaching news continues to emerge out of Los Angeles as the National Championship-winning head coach builds out his staff. On Tuesday, it was reported that Harbaugh is bringing another member of the Michigan Wolverines with him. Dylan Roney, who helped coach edge rushers at Michigan, will reportedly jump ship to the NFL and join Harbaugh.
Dylan Roney becomes latest Michigan staffer to join Jim Harbaugh on the Chargers
There was no question that Harbaugh was going to bring some of the Michigan staff with him to the Chargers. There are now three confirmed staffers from Michigan who will be joining Harbaugh, with the first two being hugely impactful.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is making the leap from Michigan to the Chargers and should be a huge addition for the Bolts. Minter has an excellent defensive mind and should fix what Brandon Staley broke on the defensive side of the ball.
The other is strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert. Herbert could end up being the most impactful hire that Harbaugh makes as he could be the driving force behind changing the culture in LA and getting rid of the injury-prone narratives.
Roney is not a known commodity like Herbert and Minter as he held a smaller role under Minter at Michigan. However, he is obviously good enough for both Minter and Harbaugh to believe in him and bring him into the NFL. Every coach starts somewhere, and the Chargers could be laying the seeds for Roney to work his way up the coaching staff.
Regardless, Harbaugh is trying to reset the culture in Los Angeles and Roney will be a part of those efforts. The more Harbaugh brings in coaches from great programs or teams (like Michigan), the better for the future of the franchise.
