Chargers work out two potential quarterbacks in wake of Justin Herbert's injury
The LA Chargers reportedly conducted workouts with three players on Monday at practice. Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, Los Angeles hosted Luiz Perez, Re-Al Mitchell, and Isaiah Wooden.
Luiz Perez and Re-Al Mitchell are both intriguing. Following the injury to Justin Herbert, it seems that the Chargers are at the very least looking for more depth with camp body QBs.
Perez played for the Arlington Renegades in the UFL last season. He led the league in both passing yards and touchdowns. Perez stated to Fox Sports R.J. Young back in May that his goal was to eventually make it back to the NFL.
Re-Al Mitchell was a dual-threat quarterback at Iowa State and Temple who ended up transferring to San Diego. At San Diego, he'd end up playing wide receiver. Mitchell went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. He's still essentially an undrafted free agent for the time being. In Season 2 of Netflix's "QB1: Beyond The Lights", Mitchell appeared as the main quarterback covered in the show along with Justin Fields and Sam Hartman.
In addition to Mitchell being worked out as a QB/WR, the Chargers also worked out former Southern Utah wide receiver Isaiah Wooden. Wooden went undrafted in 2024 but originally signed an UDFA contract with the Atlanta Falcons. However, Wooden was waived last Tuesday in a move to create roster space.
It is hard to gauge what this means for the Chargers and Justin Herbert
It's hard to ascertain if the Chargers just want more depth while Herbert is injured or if they're actively looking for upgrades over Max Duggan and Casey Bauman. Right now, it would make sense that they're more concerned about the former rather than the latter.
However, it will be worth monitoring the progress of all three quarterbacks behind Herbert on the depth chart to see if there are any noteworthy shifts in the Chargers' confidence level. Los Angeles has three training camp practices left prior to their Saturday kickoff vs. the Seahawks.
Taking a look at a few wide receivers in this instance is also of note. WR Ladd McConkey missed Thursday's practice and then reportedly limped off of the practice field on Friday. Since then, McConkey has not practiced for the last two days. The Chargers could simply be scouring for some extra camp bodies as mentioned before.
The Chargers last tryout back in June yielded the signing of former Ravens' safety Tony Jefferson. We'll see if these three workouts lead to any more signings for the team.
