Chargers players explain why Jim Harbaugh is exactly what team has been missing
By Ryan Heckman
Gone are the times of a Los Angeles Chargers team that receives sympathy over apathy or faith. It's one thing to be a bad team and everyone knows it. It's another thing to be a good team that inspires faith within its fan base.
And, then, it is an entirely different story when you're a fan base of a team that hears more sympathetic laughs and the recurring "I'm so sorry" during your morning trip to the water cooler.
One man has come into the building, in Los Angeles, to change the whole narrative. New head coach Jim Harbaugh is on a mission to drastically shift the outlook of what the Chargers organization looks like, not just on a long-term approach, but the here and now. The impact has been immediate.
At a recent training camp practice, NFL analyst Kay Adams caught up with some Chargers players who spoke highly of their new head coach and why he brings a different vibe to camp.
Running back J.K. Dobbins and pass rusher Khalil Mack are not the only ones to show such strong belief in their new head coach. This has been a running theme since Day 1. Players have appreciated the love and support from Harbaugh while also understanding he's going to run a tough, physical program.
In a league where many up-and-coming, youthful coordinators receive head coaching gigs, the Chargers went the old school route in hiring Harbaugh.
This is a team that needed his attitude and spark.
Jim Harbaugh is going to rid this organization and fan base of "Chargering" once and for all
Before Harbaugh, former head coach Brandon Staley attempted to take hold of the team and instill faith in his players by making power moves. Chargers fans know this all too well. Staley's in-game decision-making wasn't always up to par, and at times it came across as though he thought he was the smartest guy in the room when, in actuality, he wasn't.
And everyone knew it but Staley.
Now, with Harbaugh in charge, there is a completely different feel, as players have stated. That "aura" Dobbins speaks of is that of a head coach who knows what he's doing, why he's doing it and how to secure the buy-in from his entire roster.
Harbaugh is a proven winner. He's a proven player's coach with a tough-nosed mentality who will not be broken, and that's what has been missing for a very long time, here. The Chargers have wasted far too many years "Chargering," as it's been come to know.
Even though the regular season has yet to kick off, fans can hold out hope that this team is going to be different. This won't be a team that's going to lie down when the game is on the line, or give it away in only a fashion this team has been known to do.
Harbaugh's mentality and coaching style has not just rubbed off on the players, but it's being embraced. There is more than enough reason to believe L.A. is going to experience a turnaround much faster than is the norm for a team like this, and Harbaugh will be reason no. 1 as to why it happened.
