Chargers O-line depth takes a hit as Jamaree Salyer leaves practice with injury
By Jason Reed
Staying as healthy as possible is a huge part of the winning equation in the NFL, that is why LA Chargers fans were so excited when head coach Jim Harbaugh brought Ben Herbert with him to the team.
Thus far the Chargers have been mostly healthy during training camp albeit with some hiccups. Rashawn Slater was removed from practice with an apparent injury but returned in a limited capacity after the weekend. Gus Edwards is coming along with whatever he is dealing with and Junior Colson was placed on the NFI list after having his appendix removed.
During Tuesday's practice session of Chargers training camp, the team added another injury to the list. Backup offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer, who started all 17 games for the Chargers last season, was rolled up on and left practice early with trainers.
Jamaree Salyer exits Chargers training camp with apparent injury
After starting all 17 games at right guard last season, Salyer was reduced to a bench role with first-round pick Joe Alt starting at right tackle and kicking Trey Pipkins to right guard. While he currently is not in line to start, Salyer is still very important for this offensive line.
Salyer is going to be the first line of defense if the Chargers suffer any injuries or there are any underperformers on the offensive line. If the team needs to make any kind of change on the line, Salyer is going to be the first name that is called.
If one of the guards is struggling then Salyer will be the one to slot in. If one of the tackles gets hurt then Salyer will either play tackle (which he did his rookie season) or Pipkins will kick over to tackle and Salyer will start.
With how common injuries are in the NFL, there is a good chance Salyer will be tabbed with starting at least one game for the Bolts in 2024. Thus, it is important that he stays healthy and doesn't have to deal with any injuries throughout the season.
Seeing him leave practice early with an injury is not a great sign but it is not the end of the world for the Bolts. After all, the team is still very early in the training camp process and has over a month to go until the start of the regular season.
Plus, the injury does not appear to be too serious with Salyer walking off on his own power. Expect the Chargers to rightfully be cautious with the injury but in the grand scheme, Salyer should be okay.
