The Chargers do not have a single running back with consistent NFL experience on the roster right now. Isaiah Spiller is the only back on the roster and he has not proven that he is reliable in his two years in the league. With a new regime, there is no guarantee that Spiller even makes next season's roster.

The Chargers need to rebuild the running back room from the ground up and that is going to take both free agency and in the NFL Draft. As far as free agency is considered, there are several enticing cheap veterans who have ties to the Chargers that could be signed.

The best of that group might be Zach Moss, who has a very specific tie to the Chargers that may take precedent over the other candidates. Moss played for new running backs coach Kiel McDonald while they were both at Utah.

Moss is not someone who a team should sign to be a bell cow back but he has more than proven that he is a serviceable rotation option that can elevate an offense. Just look at what Moss did last season for the Indianapolis Colts as he had several big games that propelled the team.

If the Chargers really wanted to, they could build a running back room completely influenced by McDonald by taking USC's Marshawn Lloyd in the 2024 NFL Draft (McDonald was the running backs coach at USC prior to taking the Chargers job). Moss and Lloyd would actually complement each other nicely as well.
