Jim Harbaugh is officially the head coach of the LA Chargers and he is ushering in a new era of football with him. This is the biggest hire in the history of the franchise and now a Super Bowl is legitimately in the picture alongside Justin Herbert.
Harbaugh will look to do what he has done in several other stops in his career and re-invent the culture of the team. If there was ever a team that needed reinvention it is the Chargers, as "Chargering" has become an unfortunate trend dating back decades.
With a new culture will come new expectations and more accountability. Harbaugh is bringing a new GM along with him and there are several players on the roster who won't benefit from the comfort of having their old head coach or the GM who drafted them in the building.
4 Chargers who are not safe with Jim Harbaugh as the head coach:
Quentin Johnston
Quentin Johnston was one of the worst first-round picks in the entire 2023 NFL Draft. The 21st overall pick did next to nothing for the Chargers in his rookie season and even more painfully, was drafted in front of Zay Flowers and Jordan Addison.
The Chargers are not going to outright give up on the sophomore receiver before his second season but there will no longer be the benefit of the doubt. Harbaugh has no emotional ties to Johnston and if he is playing like he did last season he will bury him on the depth chart and eventually part ways. It does not matter that the previous GM used a first-round pick to take him.
Johnston simply needs to step his game up and hiring Harbaugh is the reality check that he needs. Every single Chargers fan will support him as he looks to improve but if he doesn't, he will quickly lose the support of the fanbase and his new head coach.
