The LA Chargers did not play on Thursday Night Football but fans of the team still had a great night regardless. The Kansas City Chiefs opened the season by hosting the Detroit Lions and struggled to get going offensively, losing 21-20 in the process.

It is always great for Chargers fans to watch the Chiefs lose and it is even better when the Chiefs actually look human. There is a lot of football that still needs to be played but it is safe to say that Chargers fans are not afraid of this version of the Chiefs.

There was an additional storyline for Chargers fans to follow in this game thanks to linebacker Drue Tranquill. Tranquill spurned the Chargers in the offseason to sign a one-year, $3 million contract with Kansas City. It rubbed a lot of Chargers fans the wrong way, so he was naturally going to be playing with a spotlight on him in this game.

Tranquill did not do much, finishing the game with only two total tackles. His tackle count was low as Tranquill hardly saw the field for Kansas City. And of course, Chargers fans made sure to have a field day at Tranquill's expense.

Tranquill did not factor into Kansas City's defensive plans despite being lauded as the best coverage linebacker that the team had. While Kansas City wasn't torched defensively, you would think that the Chiefs would want to throw out their best coverage linebacker in a game against a top offense.

Instead, most of Tranquill's reps were reserved for special teams. To be fair to the former Charger, he is still a very good special teams player and can make an impact on that side of the ball. It just is not as big of an impact as it would be on defense.

Some Chargers fans had a theory, though. Perhaps Tranquill signed with the Chiefs so he could take on a different role. Instead of making an impact on the field, he could act as a depth option that coaches up the rest of the linebackers on the roster.

In all seriousness, it will be interesting to see how the Chargers' linebacker room shapes up with Tranquill out of the picture. He undoubtedly was the best linebacker the team had last season and there are some question marks in 2023.

Eric Kendricks has a solid resume but at his age is he going to be able to produce at a high level? There is a lot of hype around a Kenneth Murray breakout season, but will it actually happen or will he continue to struggle?

One thing is for certain. Tranquill probably could have played more if he re-signed with the Chargers this offseason.
