The LA Chargers have interviewed quite a few head coaching candidates already this offseason but the favorite for the job is still Jim Harbaugh. Chargers fans are begging the team to make a splashy head coach hire and Harbaugh would be the definition of that.

On paper, this is the perfect time for Harbaugh to make the leap to the NFL. He accomplished the goal of winning a National Championship with Michigan and has a perfect job waiting for him in the Chargers. Harbaugh reportedly loves Justin Herbert and there hasn't been a job as good as this one that has opened in recent years when Harbaugh was previously flirting with the NFL.

At the end of the day, Harbaugh holds all the cards and he could simply choose to return to Michigan. While that is absolutely a possibility, Chargers fans are now convinced that Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy just telegraphed that it won't happen. McCarthy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft, with some fans theorizing that he did so because he know Harbaugh is leaving.

To be fair, if McCarthy did get wind that Harbaugh was not going to return to Michigan then he definitely would declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. But that is not the only reason why he might have declared.

While nothing was official, it was long expected that McCarthy would declare for this year's draft. This is not a massive surprise and doesn't guarantee anything, even though Chargers fans want to think it does.

That being said, it may help swing Harbaugh's decision. McCarthy declaring doesn't mean that he knows Harbaugh is coming to the NFL but it could have the inverse effect. McCarthy declaring might be the decider that brings Harbaugh to the NFL now.

Harbaugh and McCarthy have a great relationship. If McCarthy announced that he was returning to Michigan then it would be even more telling. McCarthy would not have returned to Michigan if he knew Harbaugh was gone. That didn't happen, which does help the Chargers' chances.

It is not hard to talk yourself into this theory. If Harbaugh and McCarthy wanted to they could run it back next season and contend for back-to-back National Championships. Nobody would blame McCarthy for doing that, especially in a draft class that is loaded at quarterback. If McCarthy just waits a year he might become a first-round prospect instead of a mid-round prospect.

Perhaps McCarthy is the first prominent member of the Michigan Wolverines to confirm his arrival to the NFL. Maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with Harbaugh. One thing is for certain: the buzz is impossible to ignore among Chargers fans.
