While the Chargers still have an outside chance of making the NFL Playoffs this season, many fans have already turned their attention to the offseason. Most notably, fans are starting to speculate about who might replace Brandon Staley as head coach if the Chargers decide to part ways.
There are a myriad of compelling candidates that could make sense for the Bolts with the most prominent being Jim Harbaugh. After missing out on Sean Payton a year ago, fans have latched onto Harbaugh as the dream candidate for the 2024 coaching cycle.
Harbaugh has flirted with an NFL return for several years and after being suspended by the Big 10 this season, he may finally make that leap if the right job opens up. After all, if Michigan wins the National Championship this season there would be no better way for Harbaugh to go out than on top.
Many believe that the Chargers are the "right job" for Harbaugh because of one reason: Justin Herbert. ESPN's Mike Greenberg added fuel to that fire on Monday, sharing with The Pat McAfee Show that Harbaugh has a true affinity for Herbert among all of the young, elite QBs.
NFL Rumors: Jim Harbaugh to Chargers heats up thanks to Justin Herbert
This is one of those things that are painfully obvious but is still great to hear if you are a Chargers fan who wants Harbaugh to coach the team. Of course, Harbaugh would be in love with the idea of coaching Justin Herbert because any coach in the league would be excited to coach one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
It isn't that Harbaugh is intrigued by Herbert, it is the fact that someone in the media who had a conversation with him is saying it on ESPN's biggest show. Information like this doesn't just leak out, often times it is said with purpose and intent. This feels like one of those instances.
Greenberg likely reached out to Harbaugh that it was okay to say on television and if Harbaugh didn't stop him, what does that tell you? Even if Greenberg didn't specifically reach out to Harbaugh, the fact that he was comfortable enough to share this should tell the entire story.
Add in the fact that Greenberg decided to end the entire anecdote with his prediction that Harbaugh will leave Michigan and it is the icing on the cake. It probably doesn't come down to whether Harbaugh wants to make the leap, it'll come down to if the Chargers want to spend to hire him.
