Chargers cutting this fringe roster player is inevitable after Seahawks loss

It might take only one preseason game for the Chargers to make up their mind with this fringe roster player.

The LA Chargers lost their first game of the Jim Harbaugh era on Saturday but thankfully it does not count whatsoever. The preseason is all about information gathering and the Chargers certainly did a lot of that in the team's 16-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Easton Stick's porous performance was the biggest talking point of Saturday's game with Harbaugh refusing to name him the starting quarterback for Week 2 of the preseason. If Justin Herbert's injury is more serious than expected the Chargers may be in trouble.

There were some positives from the game as well as several players fighting for roster spots made an impression on the fanbase and coaching staff. Unfortunately, because of the nature of the beast, the negative stick out more after a preseason loss like this and that is bad news for one player specifically.

Former Las Vegas Raiders first-round pick Alex Leatherwood is fighting for a roster spot in LA as a swing tackle. Leatherwood needs to make a good impression to earn a roster spot and the former Alabama offensive lineman did not do that.

Alex Leatherwood may have cemented himself as a roster cut in Chargers' preseason loss

It would be one thing if Leatherwood was coming to the Chargers with an impression track record. If that was the case he would be getting the benefit of the doubt and we could chalk it up to it just being a bad game for the former first-round pick.

But that is not the case at all as performance-wise, Leatherwood has been one of the worst first-round picks in recent memory. Leatherwood was awful for the team that drafted him and a second chance with the Chicago Bears did not turn into any productive play, either.

At this point, Leatherwood is not just fighting for his spot on the Chargers roster but is fighting for a job in the NFL. If he cannot cement himself on the Chargers after the team took a chance on him then there probably is not another team in the league that will be willing to.

At the end of the day, though, this should not come as a surprise at all to Chargers fans. For years Chargers fans poked fun at the Raiders for Leatherwood's terrible play but once he signed with the Bolts, some in the fanbase spun it as a positive thinking something could be unlocked with the Bolts.

That is looking more and more like a fever dream as Leatherwood looked exactly like the same player he has been for his entire (short) NFL career thus far.
