Chargers coach reveals most challenging part of coaching Justin Herbert
By Jason Reed
If you were to build a quarterback in a lab there is a good chance it would have all of the same traits as LA Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert may not be the best quarterback in the league (that honor belongs to Patrick Mahomes) but he has all the traits of a successful quarterback.
In addition to all his robotic physical features, Herbert has the favorable traits teams look for off the field as well. While he might not be the most outspoken in the media, he is a leader of men whose football intellect has allowed him to juggle a fourth offensive playbook in his fifth season as a pro.
Nobody is perfect in the NFL, though, and Herbert certainly has his own shortcomings. New executive director of player performance Ben Herbert recently appeared on an episode of the "Chargers Weekly" podcast and explained what the biggest challenge of coaching Herbert is. Thankfully, it is the perfect kind of "challenge" to have.
The biggest challenge of coaching Justin Herbert proves why the Chargers are blessed
Ben Herbert proclaims the biggest challenge of coaching his quarterback is protecting him from himself. If there were any doubts about Justin Herbert's work ethic off the field they should be put to be instantly.
It is great for the team to have someone like Ben Herbert who understands the dichotomy of getting the most out of his roster without pushing them too hard. There definitely is a fine line that exists and after getting injured in each of the last two years, the last thing the Bolts need is another Justin Herbert injury.
Granted, neither injury was a result of working too hard in the gym as they were both fluke football injuries. But there have been so many injuries over the course of recent Chargers history that could possibly be attributed to pushing it too hard in the weight room.
Ben Herbert is not going to allow that to happen on his watch and that is why Chargers fans are so excited for him to join the coaching staff. That does not mean injuries won't ever happen as they are simply part of the game in football. But with a new philosophy in the building, perhaps the Chargers can be much more durable than they have been in the past.
That new philosophy extends to the star quarterback as well and he is the most important person that can buy in. If Justin Herbert understands his limitations while still getting the most out of his body then the rest of his teammates will, too.
