The fate of the Chargers' coaching staff will be determined at the end of the season. But an 0-6 start is not what anyone envisioned-certainly not Jim Harbaugh, Joe Hortiz, or Mike McDaniel. In the teams' last 11 games, the franchise brain trust will need to fight to save their jobs.
At the BYE week, LA's coaching staff is presumably putting the finishing touches on their adjustments for the rest of the season. But while there's turmoil in Chargers land as the season collapses, a franchise legend may be spreading his own wings.
Chargers legend Philip Rivers might have an interesting next chapter of his career planned (and it's probably not on LA's coaching staff).
After a loss to Stanford, NC State fired HC David Doeren. Immediately after the firing, leaks started coming out about potential candidates for the job. As you may recall, one particular Chargers legend played for NC State back in the day:

The NFL legend played for the Wolfpack. His son Gunner is a 4-star QB commit.

Philip Rivers has been the head football coach of St. Michael Catholic High School since his initial retirement from the NFL in 2021. His son Gunner Rivers committed to NC State in February of this year. Rivers has coached his son at St. Michael Catholic for the last four years.
Rivers has expressed an interest in coaching past the high school level previously. In January, he had an interview with the Bills for their head coaching vacancy. While he didn't get the job, that interview itself felt like it was Rivers' way of putting himself on the market for other opportunities that may arise.
That brings us back to the Chargers. Genuinely, no one seems to know what their coaching situation is going to look like at the end of the year. Will OC Mike McDaniel survive the next month? Would HC Jim Harbaugh still have enough organizational goodwill to stay after a truly bad 3-14, 4-13 type of season?
If the organization were to interview candidates for either HC or OC, one would think Rivers would be on the list of people to communicate with. Given his relationship with the organization spanning nearly two decades, it's hard to imagine the Spanos family not at least giving him a call.
That obviously doesn't happen if Rivers were to take the head coaching job at NC State. But if Rivers had a plan for how he'd approach Justin Herbert's situation and level of play this year, it would make sense to at least hear him out as a former quarterback.
There's of course a lot of risk involved with hiring collegiate or high school candidates at the NFL level. Cautionary tales exist like Urban Meyer or Chip Kelly. But even if the Chargers were to ultimately choose a vet HC or OC to lead their coaching staff over Rivers, I'd imagine they'd at least talk to him first. That's all.
Anyways, all of this speculation may be for nothing if Harbaugh is still likely to return with two years left on his deal. But it's worth mentioning the recent availability of Rivers on the coaching market if the season continues to sink for the Chargers.
