The NFL might just run in the family business. Gunner Rivers, the son of Los Angeles Chargers legend Philip Rivers, has garnered considerable collegiate interest. Rivers is a four-star quarterback in the 2027 class. In the 2027 On3 Industry Ranking, Rivers is the #57 overall prospect in the class and the number seven quarterback in the class.
As the son of an NFL legend, it's no surprise that Gunner has his fair share of offers already. According to 247Sports, Rivers has offers from South Carolina, Miami, Boston College, Auburn, and NC State. NC State is notably his father's alma mater.
Which prominent school is Philip Rivers's son visiting?
Per a new report from On3's "Inside Texas", the recruiting field for the services of Gunner Rivers will likely end up broader than just those five early schools. Rivers reportedly visited Texas at their annual June 1st elite camp. He talked about why he attended the Texas camp:
“Mainly the coaches. Coach Sark (HC Steve Sarkisian) has done a really good job here,” Rivers said. “I talked to coach Sark after the camp. He told me I did pretty well. I enjoyed it.”
Sarkisian is adept at handling a famous family name prospect quarterback. Arch Manning is entrenched as the starter at Texas this year following Quinn Ewers' selection by the Miami Dolphins in the 2025 NFL Draft.
On what would be important in his recruiting process, Rivers told Justin Wells of Inside Texas what he is looking for in his college of choice.
“Development is one thing, and just the right coaches. My best fit for me, and just whichever can make me the most successful.”
Given the impact of Philip Rivers on the Chargers' franchise, fans will follow Gunner Rivers' successes on the college recruiting trail. Rivers will enter his junior year of high school in 2025. He currently attends St. Michael Catholic High School. Philip Rivers has been the head football coach of the Alabama-based high school since his NFL retirement in 2021.
