Mike Williams' next team is painfully obvious (and it's awful for the Chargers)
By Ryan Heckman
Tuesday was as chaotic a day in the NFL as we have seen all season, so far, with multiple trades going down and a couple of them including Pro Bowl wide receivers. Unfortunately, part of the aftermath could have a negative impact on these very LA Chargers.
It all began when the New York Jets traded for Davante Adams, prying him away from the Las Vegas Raiders who hadn't yet gotten what they wanted for the star wideout. After a Monday Night Football loss, the Jets made this move out of obvious desperation to try and salvage their season.
Of course, the rest of the day was home to a few more trades including that of Amari Cooper heading to the Buffalo Bills. But, for the sake of the topic at hand, let's stay within the Jets and Adams situation, here.
After adding Adams, their next move seemed quite predictable. With Garrett Wilson locked in as a starter and Allen Lazard being a favorite for Aaron Rodgers, that gives the Jets their top three receivers with those two and Adams. So, what does it mean for former Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets this past offseason?
In a nutshell: he gone.
Williams was the subject of a key mishap late in the game on Monday night, too, when he slipped on a route that could have set the Jets up for a game-tying or game-winning score. Rodgers was not happy about it after the fact, and didn't hold back on his feelings about the situation.
More Chargers news:
It isn't any wonder why Williams is now the odd man out. But where could he go?
It's only a matter of time before Mike Williams is traded to the Chiefs
With Adams and Cooper off the trade block, Williams might be the next-best name available. There are others such as DeAndre Hopkins, Darius Slayton and a few more possibilities. But, Williams is probably the most attractive out of them all, especially with him being a big-bodied deep threat for a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs, of course, have lost both Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown for the season, due to injuries, and now likely look to try and add some depth before the Nov. 5 trade deadline. Getting a veteran like Williams makes more sense than ever, now, with the context of Tuesday's trades.
Should Kansas City make a deal for Williams, they're only going to get tougher to beat. Already at 5-0, Kansas City is headed for a three-peat, in their minds. That's the goal. And, it's painful to think that a former Charger could assist them in getting there.
Funny enough, the Chargers could use Williams right about now. The lack of depth at wide receiver very well could be addressed by bringing him back. But, will he end up with a rival? We'll have to wait and find out.
