Aaron Rodgers doesn't hesitate to throw ex-Chargers' WR Mike Williams under the bus

The LA Chargers had to part ways with two prominent wide receivers in the spring as Mike Williams was released and Keenan Allen was traded to the Chicago Bears. Williams eventually landed with the New York Jets after speculation about a potential return to the Chargers at a cheaper price.

On paper, Williams was a no-brainer addition to the Jets as he would give quarterback Aaron Rodgers one of the best contested-catch artists in the game. In reality, the partnership has not been as fruitful as the Jets have stumbled to a 2-4 start. Williams has 10 catches for 145 yards with no touchdowns.

Despite the lack of production, Rodgers attempted to hook up with Williams on a deep bomb late in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. The pass did not go as planned, though, as Williams slipped late in the play, allowing the Buffalo defense to undercut the pass to secure the game-winning interception.

When asked about the play after the game, Rodgers did not hesitate to throw his teammate under the bus, sharing that Williams ran the wrong route on the play. There is nothing like your quarterback going to the media and outwardly sharing that you are the reason for the game-losing play!

If the Chargers can rescue Mike Williams for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, they should

Whether or not this was Williams' fault is irrelevant. It is actually bewildering that the quarterback of the team, who is meant to lead by example, is so willing to go to the media and outwardly blame one of his teammates.

Most other quarterbacks in the league, especially Justin Herbert, would stand at that podium and take full blame for the play. It does not matter who was really to blame for the play. Having your teammates back and not airing out his mistakes to the media is part of the gig.

If Rodgers is comfortable airing out Williams' mistake to the media, he probably is comfortable phasing him out of the passing game after what he believes to be a huge mistake. Williams is already hardly used in the passing game and this may be the final straw in Rodgers' eyes.

There has been speculation around the Jets trading Williams to make room for Davante Adams, who has been tied to New York after his trade request from the Las Vegas Raiders.

If there is any way the Chargers can get involved with this dysfunction and rescue Williams from this situation then it would be a no-brainer for the team. Los Angeles would likely get Williams for pennies on the dollar, and by doing so, would give Herbert a valuable weapon he is comfortable throwing to.

The Chargers need receiver help anyway and if the team is going to go out and get help, it might as well trade for someone who already knows what it takes to be successful with Herbert under center.

And at the very least, Williams will know that his quarterback won't outwardly throw him under the bus or any mistake he may or may not have made.
