Training camp is underway, and the Los Angeles Chargers are carrying lofty expectations from both fans and the media heading into the 2026 season.
With the additions the team has made, the return of key players, and coaching changes that fans could only dream of, the expectations in Los Angeles go far beyond simply making the playoffs. Justin Herbert has already locked up one ring recently (albeit a wedding ring), and fans are leaving little excuse for the franchise quarterback not to give himself a chance at a second, much flashier one.
Expectations are sky-high, and that seems to extend to veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack, a player who commands the respect of the entire league.

Mack is a football player by every definition. A man whose legacy cannot be questioned by any team he's played for, any fan base he's tormented, or anyone in between. When Mack has an opinion on football, people listen.
If Mack was willing to sacrifice another year away from his family, another year watching his children grow up, and another year before calling it a career because he believes the Chargers have a legitimate chance to accomplish the ultimate goal, Chargers fans should be thrilled.
Mack has sat through the meetings. He has worked with the coaching staff and seen what new defensive coordinator Chris O'Leary has planned for this season. He would've been well within his rights to decide, "It's been a great ride, but this team doesn't have what it takes to get it done when it matters." Had he made that decision, no one would've blamed him. A future Hall of Famer walking away when he feels the time is right is completely understandable.
Instead, one of the game's most respected veterans consciously decided to put the next chapter of his life on hold for one more season. That's a pretty strong sign that he believes something special could be happening in Los Angeles.
There are still question marks surrounding the defense entering the O'Leary era after Jesse Minter departed for Baltimore. But if there is anyone who can help put fans at ease, it's Mack. The Chargers head into 2026 expecting to compete with the best teams in football, and having a player of Mack's stature buy into that vision is just another reason for optimism.
As training camp gets underway, excitement is building around this team. Khalil Mack clearly believes the Chargers are capable of something special. That's a belief Chargers fans have every reason to share.
