Chargers react to Justin Herbert's engagement (with a Super Bowl twist)

Chargers QB Justin Herbert got engaged to his now fiancée Madison Beer on Tuesday. Beer and Herbert had dated for roughly a year before he popped the question. This offseason, they took a vacation to Europe as Beer was on her international tour.

Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh famously approved of Herbert's offseason vacation during the non-mandatory portion of the offseason with his usual quirky personality. Harbaugh offered to drive Herbert to the airport to get him the break with Beer that he deserved.

Harbaugh was asked about Beer and Herbert's engagement on Tuesday and once again put his old witty touch on it.

"We didn't know till after, but he told us. We were all in the quarterback room and he told us," Harbaugh said. "He kind of told us it was going to happen this summer and everything. But yeah, just awesome. Feel great for him. That's awesome."

Harbaugh then jokingly referred to the date of next year's Super Bowl for the newly engaged couple's next Valentine's Day together. "Valentine's Day, SoFi! Little hairs on your arms start standing up."

Safety Derwin James Jr. was also asked about Herbert's new engagement.

"I was like, 'oh man, congrats man!', I was happy for him," James started. "I was tweeting 7, 8AM when I seen it. He told me he was gonna do it a long time ago, but when he finally did it man-it was fun to see."

Herbert himself was asked if he had more anxiety for the proposal or his first start in the NFL vs. the Chiefs in 2020. "The proposal, for sure," the LA quarterback said outright.

Of course a funny anecdote to that is Herbert ultimately had more time to plan the proposal as opposed to his first start. Due to then starting QB Tyrod Taylor's pregame pneumothorax, Herbert was told he was starting just minutes before the game was about to kick off. "I thought about it a lot," Herbert said of the proposal. The Athletic's Daniel Popper then said jokingly, "more time to prepare than your first start." Herbert said it felt like he probably didn't even have 90 seconds to prepare for his first game in that moment.

It's great to see Herbert's teammates and coaches rally around him and support the news of his engagement. There's no one more deserving of it than Los Angeles' QB1 who holds the organization together.
