After making several moves to beef up the blocking with the likes of Charlie Kolar and Alec Ingold, the LA Chargers gave Mike McDaniel his first true new weapon by signing former Baltimore Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell to a one-year deal.

Mitchell is a familiar name for Chargers fans who pounded the table for him as a trade target last season when Omarion Hampton injured his ankle. While a trade never happened, the Chargers remedied that months later by signing him to a two-year deal.

Mitchell beefs up the running back room while also providing another option at returner for the Bolts. More importantly, he gives McDaniel a weapon he didn't have on the Chargers that he was so used to having on the Dolphins: a dynamic, top-tier athlete who can beat defenses with his speed and athleticism alone.

Mitchell was, quite literally, the fastest running back in the league last season. Two of the names he beat out at the top of the list are guys McDaniel is very familiar with.

Keaton Mitchell's speed makes him a dangerous weapon for the Chargers

Speed kills in the NFL and now the Chargers have a legitimate weapon that McDaniel can scheme around in the backfield. Hampton will still serve as the obvious RB1 but don't be surprised if Mitchell has RB1-like production as a dual-threat back.

That's not to say that Mitchell will be the Chargers' version of Devon Achane as that is a tall order for a backup running back to live up to. But McDaniel can scheme Mitchell to do similar things that Achane would do in the Dolphins' offense. And if it all works around him, Mitchell can be legitimately dangerous as a result.

This is all part of McDaniel's offensive vision, which will field a product that looks much different than Chargers fans are used to. Yes, there are still concerns along the interior offensive line, but the pieces around the guard positions are all setting the Chargers up to have a widely successful offense in 2026.

And while it might not be with better starting guards, getting a difference-maker like Mitchell in the backfield does help the Chargers protect Herbert. With various threats in the backfield, pass rushers can't simply pin their ears back and go after the quarterback like they did for much of last season. With a more well-rounded offensive attack, Herbert can make the most of his reps under center and in the pocket.

Mitchell is going to be the poor man's Achane for the Chargers, and it undoubtedly makes the team better for it. Don't be surprised when the exciting young back breaks off several highlight-reel plays throughout the 2026 season.
