Justin Herbert has made a habit of rewriting NFL history throughout his career, a trend that began during his first season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. While his 4,336 passing yards fell just short of the rookie record held by Andrew Luck (4,374), the Oregon alum did set new marks for passing touchdowns (31), total touchdowns (36), most 300-yard passing games (8), and most games with at least three touchdown passes (6).
To set ridiculous records like that, of course, one has to throw (and obviously complete) a lot of passes, which is why Herbert also set the rookie record for completions, racking up 396. And as it pertains to that particular statistic, he's set multiple marks since, setting records for the most completions by a quarterback in his first 50 games (1,316) and the most completions by a quarterback through his first five seasons (1,945).
Herbert, now in his sixth season, has continued to throw the ball at a ridiculous rate through the first seven weeks of this 2025 campaign, leading the NFL in pass attempts with 271, 55 of which came in the Chargers' 38-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts this past Sunday. And of those 55 attempts, he completed 37 of them, giving him 2,128 for his career, thus tying him with Peyton Manning for the most by a quarterback in his first six seasons.
Obviously, what that means is that with his first completion on Thursday night against the Minnesota Vikings, Herbert will once again rewrite the history books. So, that's fun.
Justin Herbert is destined to make history in Chargers-Vikings
And this won't be the first time he's knocked Manning down a peg, nor will it be the last time he does so this season—assuming he stays healthy, that is, which he typically has throughout his career, missing just four games due to injury.
As mentioned, Herbert barely missed out on the rookie record for passing yards, needing just 39 to surpass Andrew Luck. In the years since, however, he has set new marks for the most passing yards through two seasons (9,350), three seasons (14,089), four seasons (17,223), and five seasons (21,093), with the first two coming at Luck's expense and the second two coming at Manning's expense.
Manning also holds the record for the most passing yards through six seasons with 24,885. After a career-high 420 yards against the Colts now has a league-leading 1,913 for the season and 23,006 for his career. As such, he now needs just 1,880 to surpass Manning to set the new six-season mark.
