Joey Bosa was the last Chargers player standing from the team's time in San Diego. After being released by the Chargers on Wednesday, Bosa now has to find another new city to continue his career.
Bosa was wholly mediocre for the Chargers in 2024 and his injuries have added up in recent years. However, he is a big name who is still on the right side of 30, so there will be inherent interest in his services.
Any contending team with the inkling of a need at the edge rusher position will be in the Bosa market this offseason. After all, the edge-rusher market is rather thin, especially with Khalil Mack's chances of returning to LA increasing after this news.
There is one team that stands head and shoulders above the rest as a potential landing spot for Bosa after being cut by the Chargers — and it's rather obvious.
49ers are clear favorites to sign Joey Bosa after Chargers release
The San Francisco 49ers are the most obvious landing spot for Bosa imaginable. At this point, it would be surprising if the Pro Bowler signed with a team that wasn't the 49ers this offseason.
San Francisco has something no other team in the league has: Bosa's brother. Bosa has been open about his desire to play with his brother, Nick Bosa, and now he has the chance to for the first time in his career.
Bosa is not going to get top-line money after the 2024 season he had and he is still getting a chunk of cash from the Chargers. San Francisco can absolutely afford Bosa at his likely market value, giving the team a perfect chance to pair him with his brother.
The 49ers definitely have the need for an additional edge rusher as well. If the team was stacked at the position it would be one thing, but San Francisco would benefit greatly from pairing the Bosa brothers together on the outside. If Joey Bosa can return to form then San Francisco would suddenly have the most dynamic pass-rushing duo in the league.
There are other contending teams with a need at edge rusher but it would likely take an overpay to convince Bosa not to sign with the 49ers. Even if his tenure in San Francisco is short-lived, this may be the only chance Bosa has to play with his brother while they are still producing at a high level.
The writing is on the wall. It may just be a matter of time before Bosa travels up the I-5 to join the 49ers.
