Keenan Allen's return to the Chargers in 2025 was generally a success. Allen had 777 yards and four touchdowns after being signed late in the summer. Considering the position the Chargers were in when they lost Mike Williams to retirement in training camp, Allen proving he still could play a role in the league was huge.

For a few months, news on Allen returning has been fairly quiet. At Super Bowl weekend, the legendary Chargers receiver said he wanted to be back with the team. On April 16th at his pre-draft press conference, Hortiz said the door was still open to Allen returning.

Chargers GM Joe Hortiz breathes new life into WR Keenan Allen's potential return.

For the first time in over a month, Hortiz addressed the possibility of Allen coming back again. On an "Up & Adams" appearance, Hortiz was asked directly about it by Kay Adams.

"Right now we're in a spot where we're looking at the roster and letting these young guys get a chance," Hortiz started. "But I've had some communication with Keenan's representation. And we talk."

"Nothing but love for Keenan [Allen]," Hortiz said. "The door is not closed. We talk."

Hortiz's comments largely echo what he said back in April. but with one key new detail. Before the draft, the Chargers GM did not admit he was actively in contact with Allen's camp. While that doesn't mean anything is going to happen immediately, it certainly shows that the Chargers have not yet turned the page away from the veteran wide receiver.

There's two ways to think about this. On one hand, it is a no-brainer. Allen and Justin Herbert have loved playing with one another. He's a franchise legend and one of the leaders on the team. There's probably a role Mike McDaniel can find for him even if it's not a 700+ yard starring role.

On the other hand, Allen's skillset does overlap with Ladd McConkey's. Both players made some sacrifices in terms of slot/outside usage in order to make the marriage work. McDaniel would certainly have better ideas on personnel usage than Roman. But does a 34-year old-Allen have a role in a speed offense based around generating YAC and explosives? That's another question for McDaniel to answer.

Allen has prioritized remaining in California and being close to his family following his Bears stint. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him back, especially if Herbert were to pound the table for it. But the questions that have to be answered first are:

1. What kind of role does Allen still want in the offense?

2. Are there better opportunities out there for him on the open market?

We'll see what happens with Allen, but Hortiz having contact with his representation is certainly a step in the right direction for fans who want him back.
