Greg Roman says exactly what Chargers fans didn't want to hear about the offense

Don't get your hopes up.

Unlike previous years where the defensive side of the ball was an issue, it is a stagnant offense that is holding the LA Chargers back in 2024. Even with an elite quarterback under center in Justin Herbert, the Chargers have been unable to consistently score points thus far in 2024.

Granted, there are many compounding variables that have led to this stagnation. Herbert has played on a sprained ankle in half of the team's games, the offensive line is banged up and is struggling, and the team doesn't have the necessary pass weapons to strike fear in the other team.

Stuff all of that into a box and the bow on top is an offensive coordinator who Chargers fans are quickly losing faith in. Greg Roman came into his new role with the Chargers with low expectations after his last offensive coordinator stint went so poorly. And with those baked-in expectations, fans are already starting to turn.

Roman's harshest critics want to see the Chargers throw the ball more so Herbert can improve from having one of the worst statistical outputs in the league. Those fans are naturally going to be left disappointed when they hear what Roman had to say about the passing offense on Thursday.

Don't expect Justin Herbert to throw more for the Chargers

Many fans believe that the fix for this Chargers offense is to turn to Herbert more than the team currently is. Herbert is averaging just 22.75 attempts per game, which is by far the lowest average of his career. Prior to this season, Herbert has not averaged fewer than 35 attempts per game and his career average currently sits at 38 attempts per game.

Roman is making it clear the Chargers will not be chasing anything to get Herbert back to his career average and as upsetting as it is, that is probably the right mindset.

Force-feeding the passing game is not going to suddenly fix this Chargers offense. Herbert still has a bad ankle, the passing weapons still leave more to be desired and the offensive line still has its question marks. If anything, Herbert attempting more passes without a proper game plan will make these issues worse.

This does not change the fact, however, that Roman has struggled to build a comprehensive game plan for the passing offense. This is an issue Roman had at his previous job so it is no surprise that he is struggling again.

Making Herbert throw more in this version of the offense is not going to fix anything. The Chargers have to fix what this offense is first.

Roman also admitted that Herbert's injury has altered the team's game plan on offense, so there is some hope that with time the Chargers will see an offense that reflects Herbert's strengths more than the current iteration is.

But then again, Roman has not really earned the benefit of the doubt with his past results, so all Chargers fans can do is wait and see.
