Philip Rivers' harsh take on Chargers' OC Greg Roman resurfaces as offense struggles

The LA Chargers have one of the most talented quarterbacks in the entire sport yet have one of the worst passing offenses in the league early on in the 2024 season.

Granted, Justin Herbert is dealing with an ankle injury that is compounded by poor offensive line play and a lack of dynamic weapons. That being said, Herbert and the offense have not been put in the best position to succeed, as the play-calling from offensive coordinator Greg Roman has been less than ideal.

Roman has already made himself a target for Chargers fans as the team struggles to put together a passing offense. These are the same issues that existed when Roman was the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens and those issues are why Chargers fans were concerned with the hire when it happened.

There is certainly a microscope on Roman as the Chargers' offense struggles. Because of this added focus, an old clip of legendary Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers criticizing Roman's offense has resurfaced, only adding fuel to the proverbial fire.

Philip Rivers criticized Greg Roman's offense before he joined Chargers coaching staff

Rivers appeared on the Manningcast back in 2021 and was alluding to a Ravens game against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football. That game was particularly blitz-heavy and the Ravens offense struggled as a result.

Baltimore scored just 10 points in that Thursday Night Football game to a Dolphins team that did not have Tyreek Hill or Mike McDaniel. The team's sluggish offense was a trend for the 2021 season, as Baltimore ranked 17th in points scored despite having an MVP at quarterback.

Ironically enough, that loss came against Brian Flores, who has completely re-established himself as a head coaching candidate as the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. Flores' blitz-heavy scheme has been giving quarterbacks fits all season long. In fact, the last quarterback to truly dissect Flores' defense was none other than Herbert.

Herbert had arguably the best game of his entire career in 2023 against Flores and the Vikings. The former Oregon Duck completed 40 of 47 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns. It is hard to imagine Herbert having the same kind of performance against a Flores defense in this current iteration of the Chargers' offense.

It does not all fall on Roman but the tenured offensive coordinator has not done enough to fully deserve the benefit of the doubt. Roman has struggled to build a holistic offense in the past, and so far, he is struggling to do so with the Chargers.

If these results continue, Jim Harbaugh needs to listen to what Rivers has to say, and needs to compare Herbert's numbers with and without Roman, and make some kind of change.
