It wasn't that long ago when it seemed like the Los Angeles Chargers were having all sorts of issues at the wide receiver position. And that was even before Mike Williams abruptly retired on the first day of training camp.
Now, however, Jim Harbaugh is going to have some tough decisions to make come final cutdown day on August 26, as the wide receiver room has gotten quite crowded.
The top spot on the depth chart, of course, belongs to second-year stud Ladd McConkey, who broke all sorts of franchise records as a rookie with 82 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. Keenan Allen is now back in the mix after a year with the Chicago Bears.
And while 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston was seemingly in line to crack the starting lineup, he suffered a concussion early in the Bolts' loss to the L.A. Rams on Saturday night, at which point rookie Tre' Harris stepped up and showed out with six catches for 85 yards.
Those four are unquestionably locks for the 53-man roster, and fifth-round rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith may be close to that category as well, especially after his 66-yard performance on Saturday night.
From there, you've got Derius Davis, Jalen Reagor, Brenden Rice, Jaylen Johnson, and even undrafted rookie Dalevon Campbell giving Harbaugh plenty to think about. And another name that undoubtedly has to be thrown into the mix is Luke Grimm, who's been turning heads from the moment the Bolts signed him as an undrafted free agent back in April.
Luke Grimm is doing everything he can to make the Chargers roster
A five-year player at the University of Kansas, Grimm left the Jayhawks with the program's fourth-most career receptions (177), third-most receiving yards (2,472), and second-most receiving touchdowns (23).
Harbaugh was extremely impressed with Grimm's performance at rookie minicamp, and the Missouri native has continued to cause a stir over the first few weeks of training camp, including catching a 40-yard touchdown pass from Justin Herbert in practice this past week.
And while he only had one catch for six yards against the Rams, he wowed the crowd at SoFi Stadium early in the fourth quarter, returning a punt 66 yards for a touchdown to give the Chargers the lead.

At 5-foot-11 and 189 pounds, Grimm is never going to be the most physical player on the roster. But he's got solid 4.46 speed, which he obviously displayed in beating the Rams' gunners to the edge on that punt return, and excels in the short passing game, even earning the third-highest PFF grade in the country last season in situations ranging from zero to nine yards.
Grimm's 81.9 mark trailed only Arkansas' Andrew Armstrong (90.3), who was the SEC's leading receiver in 2024, and Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan (82.6), who was drafted eighth overall by the Carolina Panthers.
"Grimm secured 25 of 29 short-field targets for 220 yards and a touchdown in his fifth year at Kansas," PFF's Lauren Gray wrote back in February. "He gained 15 first downs, forced five missed tackles and recorded three explosive gains. He generated a 109.8 passer target rating this past season (career best) and garnered a career 78.2 PFF receiving grade on those throws."
Grimm will undoubtedly need to continue to play at his absolute best as final cutdown day inches closer. But if he continues to make the plays he's been making thus far, don't be surprised if he's on the field when the Chargers face the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil in Week 1.
