For the first time in his career, Quentin Johnston has a real sense of security with the Chargers

Of the many decisions the Los Angeles Chargers had to face this offseason, perhaps the most under-noticed one was Quentin Johnston's fifth-year option.

Johnston has certainly had his struggles and his inconsistencies through his first three years in Los Angeles, highlighted most aptly by the up-and-down nature of his production in 2025. If the Chargers wanted to pass on his fifth-year option, which will cost them nearly $16.5 million in 2027, it would have been a logical move. A 'prove-it' fourth season could've put pressure on the young receiver, and it could have given the team an easy exit from his contract via trade or free agency when the time came.

But Los Angeles' coaching staff has remained staunch in their support of Johnston. t=Their decision to pick up his fifth-year option shows a level of confidence that, in terms of on-field production, the receiver hasn't earned quite yet.

But the Chargers wholeheartedly believe he will, and that's evidently a major confidence-boost for Johnston. Speaking to Omar Navarro of Chargers.com, Johnston stressed that fact:

“It means a lot,” Johnston said, via Chargers.com. “With that validation comes a little relief for myself, a weight I have previous years on my shoulders about how I was playing and what’s going to come after that if I don’t change. Like I said, I’ve been working as hard as I can the past few years, end up getting that validation now.”- Quentin Johnston, Chargers.com

Now, as the Chargers attempt to revamp their offense under Mike McDaniel, this confidence could come to pay major dividends in the form of a breakout season for the fourth-year receiver.

Quentin Johnston needs to justify the Chargers' decision in 2026

It's not as though Johnston hasn't shown flashes of alpha-level production. Across his first four games of 2025, he amassed 22 receptions for 337 yards and four touchdowns. But injuries and the emergences of Tre' Harris and Oronde Gadsden II ate into his target share, and Johnston posted just 398 yards over his remaining 10 games of the campaign.

Chargers fans are also well aware of Johnston's inconsistencies, though. He's also spent two years of his career in a Greg Roman offense that struggled to make splashy completions downfield. While Johnston certainly has the possession skill-set and the speed to be major intermediate threat under McDaniel, that's where the true upside in his game lies— explosive, game-changing receptions.

Those won't just be given to Johnston under this new scheme. He'll need to earn them, starting with a strong performance in training camp and maintaining consistent production in the early stretches of the season.

But especially for offensive skill players, a large portion of the game can come down to your mental confidence. By his own testimony, Johnston is entering the season with a fresh boost of certainty— something that will be necessary for him to carve out the role the Chargers are asking him to.

Los Angeles' decision to pick up Johnston's fifth-year option is a gamble on his ability to shake off the inconsistencies that have plagued him to this point in his NFL career. But with an extra year on his contract, they've also lifted an immediate burden off of Johnston's shoulders.

Players are motivated in different ways, and a good head coach knows how to lean into that for each of his players. For Johnston, the confidence the Chargers have shown in him this offseason could set the stage for a major breakout in 2026.
