Chargers' post-trade deadline Super Bowl 60 odds are exactly what they should be

The Bolts are the last team listed before a steep dropoff.

The Los Angeles Chargers took fans on quite the up-and-down ride during the first half of this 2025 NFL regular season, which, as hard as it is to believe, has officially reached its midway point.

The Bolts began the season on fire, earning a trio of divisional wins to start the year, with wins over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1, the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2, and the Denver Broncos in Week 3.

But the next three games didn't go nearly as smoothly, as Los Angeles took an ugly loss to the New York Giants in Week 4, suffered an embarrassing 17-point defeat to the Washington Commanders in Week 5, and needed a miraculous play from Justin Herbert in Week 6 to escape with a two-point win over the hapless Miami Dolphins.

The final third of the first half kicked off with a beating at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7, but the Bolts have since won two straight, taking an easy win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8 and a Week 9 victory over the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday.

Quite the rollercoaster ride, wouldn't you say?

Now, given the number of injuries the Chargers have been forced to fight through, they should be pretty content with their 6-3 record at the halfway point, a mark that has them sitting in second place in the AFC West and the No. 6 slot in the overall AFC standings.

But NFL oddsmakers clearly aren't sold on the Bolts being a genuine Super Bowl contender. Maybe it's because while the Chargers are good at a lot of things, they're not really great at anything. Or perhaps it's because injuries continue to be an issue, the biggest, of course, being the season-ending ankle injury to star offensive tackle Joe Alt.

Or maybe it's that while several AFC teams made significant upgrades at the trade deadline, Los Angeles simply didn't, only adding offensive lineman Trevor Penning, who has never lived up to his draft status since the New Orleans Saints made him a first-round pick in 2022. Yes, the Chargers obviously need depth on the O-line, but there were better players available.

Whatever the reason, the Bolts simply aren't being viewed as a legit contender.

As you can see, the Chargers ranked 14th overall and seventh among AFC teams at +3500, which is probably precisely where they should be at this point.

It's a little disheartening to see the Chiefs tied at the top with the Buffalo Bills, as Kansas City wouldn't even make the playoffs if they started today, but it's also not surprising, as Patrick Mahomes & Co. obviously have a way of getting themselves in the mix when it matters most. But I digress.

Another reason the Bolts may be listed as low as they are is due to the fact that they've got the fifth-toughest remaining strength of schedule in the NFL, a slate that includes matchups with the Steelers, which takes place this Sunday, the Jaguars, the Eagles, the Chiefs, and the Broncos.

As for the other three, the Bolts should be able to take down the Raiders, but wins over the Texans and Cowboys certainly aren't guaranteed.

A .500 record the rest of the way may be enough to get the Chargers into the postseason at 10-7, but we'll just have to wait and see how things shake out in the second half.
