Earlier this week, Tre' Harris made his first appearance on the second day of Chargers training camp after ending his holdout. Being the first second-round pick required to report on July 12th, Harris' Chargers holdout became a national story while 29 other second-round picks were also without contractual agreements.

Some of the second-round picks closer to the end of the first round did end up getting fully guaranteed rookie deals. The trend as the week developed for picks after the 30s range was a compromise between sides on a guarantees increase.

The newly reported contract details for Harris ended up in the latter format. 2024's 55th overall pick was Miami Dolphins' tackle Patrick Paul. Last year, Paul agreed to a deal that guaranteed 60.2% of his total rookie contract.

Harris gets a notable increase over that figure: 71.35% of his contract is fully guaranteed. That's an 11.1% increase Paul's deal. The fully guaranteed amount for Harris is $5,578,241. His total contract over four years is worth up to $7,817,692 (APY of $1,954,423).

It's worth noting that the sticking point in negotiations was never the total value of the contract. That value was determined by the CBA. What Harris fought for was the highest guaranteed value he could get. That precedent for the players to believe they could get close to a fully guaranteed deal was kicked off this spring when Houston and Cleveland agreed to deals with their second-round picks.

Ultimately, it seems that both sides reached a fair compromise as the second-round picks do inch closer to fully guaranteed deals over time. Harris' guarantees are 17% higher than the 54.2% mark Rashee Rice received in 2023 at the same pick slot.

Now, the focus can turn to Harris making the most of his training camp reps as the Chargers look to tighten up the WR room following Mike Williams' retirement. Contract-wise, Los Angeles will also shift the agenda to getting an extension done with LT Rashawn Slater.
