Chargers WR Tre Harris (and 29 other second round picks) still caught in a contract standoff

Just two 2025 second round picks have signed on the dotted line so far. A contract battle will continue to be waged as fully guaranteed rookie contracts come to the forefront.

In 2024, Chargers WR Ladd McConkey became the last second-round pick to sign his rookie contract on June 17th. This year, business hasn't been so simple. Only two second-round picks agreed to deals. Cleveland's Carson Schwesinger and Houston's Jayden Higgins signed their rookie contracts back in May.

Higgins and Schwesinger both agreed to fully guaranteed rookie contracts. Higgins specifically became the first player drafted in the second round to receive a fully guaranteed deal at four years, $11.7 million.

Tre Harris still fighting for fully guaranteed deal with Los Angeles Chargers.

Chargers WR Tre Harris is included in the group of 30 second round picks that have yet to agree to their rookie contracts:

Harris was a full participant in the Chargers' OTAs and minicamp periods, but it's uncertain how things could change going forward. With just 54 days until the start of the regular season, it's unusual for so little progress to have been made on this many rookie contracts. Will rookies around the league start leveraging their practice time or preseason games in contract standoffs?

The latest Chargers' rookies to sign in recent memory were Tre' McKitty and Rashawn Slater near the end of July 2021. Prior to that, the rather infamous Joey Bosa contract situation is the only relatively recent Chargers' rookie signing to take place at the end of August.

For over two months, NFL front offices outside of Houston and Cleveland have not budged on full rookie guarantees. Of the 30 remaining second rounders, we'll have to see who blinks first in this standoff. It's worth noting that Harris' total contract value isn't at stake here-that was predetermined by his draft slot. But whether or not he'll receive the fully guaranteed contract he believes is the new standard from Joe Hortiz and the Chargers' front office is another story.

Hopefully, Harris and the Chargers are able to come to a deal sooner rather than later to avoid missing out on some key offseason development and progress.
