Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said at the team’s season-ending press conference on Wednesday that the plan was to keep the coaching staff in place without making changes. For the most part at the top coordinator positions, that is looking like it’ll remain true with OC Greg Roman and DC Jesse Minter not being pursued for head coaching vacancies so far.
However, the Chargers could still lose members of the coaching staff capable of receiving promotions elsewhere. And that could potentially start with the New England Patriots. After hiring Mike Vrabel as head coach, they’re looking to build out their coaching staff.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, New England has requested to speak with Chargers pass game coordinator Marcus Brady for their vacant offensive coordinator spot.
Chargers' Marcus Brady receives interview request from Patriots
Brady was brought into the fold with the Chargers’ new 2024 coaching staff after spending two seasons with the Eagles as a senior offensive assistant and consultant.
Before that, he ascended up the ladder of Indianapolis HC Frank Reich’s staff to eventually become offensive coordinator there. He also spent nearly a decade coaching in the CFL for the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts.
To what extent Brady was involved in play calling for the Chargers is still unknown. Back in April, he said that he’d be “heavily involved” in developing game plans with Roman. However, it was never revealed exactly who was responsible for situational and down and distance specific play calling. Outside of Roman having final say on play calls, it’ll likely never be known.
While LA was a rather middling passing offense (19th in passing yards per game in 2024) this season, there were positive developments in QB Justin Herbert’s game as well as what the team was able to do when play -action calls were well executed. They also had the rookie breakout performance of WR Ladd McConkey carry several aspects of the downfield passing game.
For as much as Jim Harbaugh wants to keep coaching continuity together in 2025, OC interest in Brady from the Patriots could be the teams’ first test in keeping their staff together.
