The NFL draft is right around the corner and the Los Angeles Chargers could go in many different directions with their first round pick. Maybe they go out and get one of the top wide receiver prospects like Emeka Egbuka out of Ohio State or Matthew Golden out of Texas. They could perhaps bring in an edge rusher to replace Joey Bosa who they released prior to free agency starting.
Joe Hortiz and Jim Harbaugh have many avenues that they could take. You can make an argument why they should go with offense or defense, but in the end, they should be looking to take the best prospect available assuming that none of the top tier talent falls down the board.
One move that is never a bad one to make is getting an impactful offensive player that will make your star quarterback happy. Throughout Justin Herbert’s career, there have been moving pieces that have affected him but the regime of Hortiz and Harbaugh have brought stability for him and the offense, for now.
They have built up the offensive line and have a running back in Najee Harris who has rushed for 1,000+ yards every single season in his career. Now it’s time to give him more weapons to throw to other than Ladd McConkey.
Latest NFL mock draft gives Justin Herbert a new best friend to throw the ball to
Sayre Bedinger from NFL Spin Zone created a four-round mock draft in which Bedinger has the Chargers landing one of the best prospects in the draft, Michigan tight end Colston Loveland.
"What’s super helpful from a prospect like Colston Loveland is the fact that he’s obviously played for Jim Harbaugh in the past. He knows what’s expected in Harbaugh’s program, and he knows the offense. If there’s a more perfect round 1 fit for the Chargers, I don’t know what it is."Sayre Bedinger, NFL Spin Zone
It’s a little bit of a reunion with Loveland and Harbaugh, and Bedinger is spot on with the fact that there is already continuity with Loveland knowing how Harbaugh is as a coach. Loveland can both be a receiver and block, which is exactly the type of player Harbaugh wants from his players.
Giving Herbert a new, young weapon opens up the playbook on offense and it takes pressure off of guys like Ladd McConkey who broke out as a rookie last season. If Loveland is still available by the time the Chargers on the clock, this should be a no-brainer move to make for the organization.
