No matter how often the Los Angeles Chargers fanbase tries to tell the NFL not to repeat some of the mistakes they made during their last few years in San Diego, the Tennessee Titans seemed doomed to repeat it, thanks to Brian Callahan making a fool of himself.

The Titans, who are seeing No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward struggle on offense as the team looks wholly inept as any in the league, fired Callahan after a 4-19 start to his tenure. Tennessee chose not to name one of their coordinators as the head coach, which means a much-maligned former Charger will be in line for the main job.

Former Chargers head coach Mike McCoy, who had joined the team before this season in a vague senior offensive assistant role, will be the head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. McCoy's time as a head coach with the Chargers is sure to bring about a flurry of expletives from any fan who sat through it.

McCoy couldn't win games with Philip Rivers in his prime. Can he turn it around with Ward? Based on the results he has put on display with the Chargers, fans shouldn't hold out hope.

Former Chargers HC Mike McCoy back as interim Titans coach

McCoy, who impressed as offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos, took over the Chargers when Rivers was at the peak of his powers. Despite making the playoffs with a 9-7 record in his first season, things got glum very quickly.

McCoty's mess of a finish in San Diego, which was capped off with nine wins in two years, was a result of two primary mistakes. Not only did his offense start to grow stale, but his refusal to part with defensive coordinator John Pogano and poor talent on that side of the ball made winning with that roster untenable.

McCoy had two terrible stints as an OC with Denver and Arizona after being fired by San Diego before serving as Trevor Lawrence's quarterbacks coach for three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. McCoy went from an extra brain to pick to running the whole ship within two months.

McCoy was nothing short of a massive disappointment in his time as a head coach with the Chargers, and any Titans fan hoping that subtracting Callahan will fix this team might need to look back at the steaming pile of wreckage he left in his wake in San Diego.
