The Los Angeles Chargers never appeared to truly be in the market for a star this offseason.
The front office has consistently taken a conservative stance under Joe Hortiz, preferring to build sustainably through the draft and amass depth. They fully accomplished that goal this offseason, and even with the ample cap space they had at their disposal, it was always unrealistic to think they would pursue a blockbuster trade.
If they were to change their minds, though, there was no target more intriguing than De'Von Achane of the Miami Dolphins.
As the Dolphins continued to strip down their roster, speculation abounded concerning Achane's potential availability via trade. Miami, for their part, consistently downplayed these rumors.
Now, however, whatever slim chance there was has officially come to an end. Achane signed a four-year, $64 million extension with the Dolphins on Monday, making him the third highest-paid running back in the NFL.

De'Von Achane inked his extension with the Dolphins, and Chargers' fans pipe dream has come to an end
When Achane trade rumors were alive and well, the Chargers were consistently listed as one of the top destinations for the fourth-year running back. In a vacuum, this was an exciting (if not reasonable) take.
Achane was consistently one of the most dynamic backs in the league under Mike McDaniel's offense scheme. Even with the Dolphins' struggles last season, he posted 1,350 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 238 attempts. After the Dolphins moved on from Jaylen Waddle in a trade with the Denver Broncos, it was only natural to think they might avoid paying Achane his due when his rookie contract came to an end.
But Miami never truly gave life to any Achane rumors, holding firm in their stance on him as a pillar of their future. For the Chargers' part, it's clear that Hampton is their pillar. They spent a first-round pick on him last offseason, and he's set to get ample opportunities even with a re-shaped outlook at the position in 2026.
But it's difficult not to be intrigued by a combination of Omarion Hampton and Achane in a McDaniel backfield. Both have the burst and pass-catching capabilities to be true weapons, and such an acquisition would've immediately placed Los Angeles' running back room among the NFL's elite.
In the modern NFL, though, teams are hesitant to make splash moves for running backs, especially those as highly paid as Achane will be. Achane, therefore, is now likely set in Miami for the duration of his second contract.
The news brings what was always a pipe dream for the Chargers to an end.
