Football is back and the Los Angeles Chargers are ready to get back to the field and prove that last year’s trip to the divisional round of the playoffs was the start of something special.

This was one of the marquee games on the league’s slate for the first week of the season but things changed drastically with the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck. Still, the Chargers must not take the Colts lightly as Jacoby Brissett is a capable backup.

The Chargers have had to dig out of an early hole often in recent years as the team has lost its last three season openers.

The Chargers lead the all-time series 18-11 and have not lost a home game to the Colts since 2008. However, the Colts won the most recent meeting 26-22.

Another storyline to follow will be the Chargers’ running game. Of course, Melvin Gordon is still holding out in hopes of a new contract so the Chargers will have to rely on the combination of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson. That said, tight end Hunter Henry will be back on the field and fully healthy.

Finally, kicker Mike Badgley is not expected to play in this game due to a groin injury. Expect punter Ty Long to handle both the punting and kicking duties. Though Badgley solved the team’s kicking issues last year, it seems that the Chargers are still cursed when it comes to kicking.
