The Chargers Priorities Before Vincent Jackson

Let’s get our priorities straightened out a little bit. Just like the rest of you, I would hate to see Vincent Jackson wearing another jersey, BUT he is not our biggest priority this offseason. We have a lot of huge holes that we need to fill and if VJ eats up all of our salary cap space with his contract, then how are we going to walk onto the field with a swiss cheese team?

Priority number 1 on offense is to protect our MVP Philip Rivers! Nick Hardwick and Jared Gaither are  free agents and we need to bring both of them back. Do we really want to have Tyronne Green as the starting left guard also? We have to give Philip time to throw the rock. If Philip is running for his life behind the line of scrimmage, how is VJ going to be able to help out? Give Philip some time to throw the football and he will be able to find an open receiver.

After we get the offensive line secure, we need to find impact players on defense. We need to be able to get the defense off of the field on 3rd down and we have to be able to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. We need to force turnovers. We need a pass rusher and a safety and some defensive line depth. There are a lot of holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball and they all need to be addressed.

VJ is great, BUT he is not the answer to some of the issues that we have. The offense has never been an issue on this team, even when VJ was not playing a couple of seasons ago. We would still be able to move the ball down the field with a receiver like Reggie Wayne or Brandon Lloyd as the number 1. Malcom Floyd, Antonio Gates and Ryan Mathews can all make things happen on the offense and we have one of the best quarterbacks in the league, the offense will be fine.

If we sign Mario Williams and let VJ walk, would you still be mad? After writing this far into this post, I realized that the only pass rusher that I want in free agency is Mario and everyone else looks like TURDS! Probably better than our turds, but turds nonetheless. I will still stick to those list of priorities before VJ, but we cannot lose him and do nothing else in free agency.

I agree with your points.  I would rather spend the money on Williams.  But, I will also add that if we don’t have VJ, we need a durable receiver that can get open.  Floyd and Gates are always dinged up.

Our roster has too many guys who can’t play all the time.

@the gorn SERIOUSLY!!! too many injuries from our team EVERY year!!!

we definitely will still have to bring in receivers if VJ walks! M80 only plays about half the game before he sits out AND he will get us only 12 games total in the season. I hope Gates can be a lot more durable this season

All I ask is that AJ improves the team.  If they let Jackson walk then they need to get a good number one receiver ASAP so Rivers and he can get on the same page.  Can we find a good wideout that won’t break the bank and still fill those holes? That said, if AJ strengthens the O-line and gets some hungry pass rushers and linebackers, I might be more inclined to not pitch a fit should we lose Jackson.  But if AJ shrugs his shoulders, says “well, we tried” and doesn’t make any real moves in free agency, I’ll be pissed.

@RussellGrant if we go into next season with the same team minus VJ and some new rookies, then we all might as well prep to hand the AFC West over to the Raiders this time.

If it came down to keeping VJ or signing Mario Williams I would have no problem if AJ choose Mario. Mario made the transition from 4-3 end to 3-4 OLB something I didn’t think that someone who weighs 283 lbs. could do. In 5 games as OLB he already had 5 sacks. He did this in Wade Phillips defense which means he would step into our defense from day one. And he just barely turned 27.

Everyone likes to blame AJ and Norv for our team floundering the last few years. I blame the loss of Shawne Merriman. We simply have not had a difference maker at OLB. No disrespect to Shawn Phillips. He simply is not Merriman. However, if we did get Mario, Shawn would be a beast again with everyone having to plan on how to stop Mario. Although I still think that we still have some holes on defense that we have to address imagine if we could have a pass rush like in the days of Merriman. I bet our secondary would take a giant leap forward.

I love VJ and he deserves a great contract. He just doesn’t deserve a Larry Fitzgerald-type contract. Hopefully, his connection to San Diego will continue. It’s all up to AJ now, folks.

BTW – Why is the national media saying that VJ is the best receiver available? With both Pierre Garcon and Marques Colston had more catches than VJ and they are both younger isn’t this just another example of the national media overhyping our free agents and downplaying other team’s free agents?
