The LA Chargers took a swing long before Tuesday's NFL trade deadline by trading Alohi Gilman and a fifth-round pick for edge rusher Odafe Oweh and a seventh-round pick. Weeks later, the Baltimore Ravens followed up the Odafe trade by acquiring someone who just terrorized the Bolts.

Baltimore traded a conditional fifth-round pick, which can convert to a fourth-round pick if certain criteria are met, for Tennessee edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones. Chargers fans should know the name all too well, as Jones just got done having the best game of his season on Sunday.

While the Oweh trade undoubtedly improved the Chargers and is still a good one for the Bolts, the Ravens ultimately come out as the big winners after swinging a trade for Jones.

Ravens just won the Odafe Oweh trade weeks after making a deal with the Chargers

With the dust settling, here is what each team ended up with:

  • Ravens added: Dre'Mont Jones, Alohi Gilman; Ravens lost: 2027 seventh-round pick
  • Chargers added: Odafe Oweh, 2027 seventh-round pick; Chargers lost: Alohi Gilman, 2025 fourth-round pick
  • Titans added: 2025 fourth-round pick; Titans lost: Dre'Mont Jones

It's safe to assume Baltimore is trading its own fourth-round pick, not the Chargers, due to the conditional nature of the selection.

Still, Baltimore could comfortably trade a fifth-round pick in next year's draft because they have extra draft capital from the Oweh trade. And when you really do the calculus of what the Ravens ended up with, it's clear why they are the winners.

The Ravens wound up with the same number of fifth-round picks, added Gilman, who has thrived in Baltimore to this point, and replaced Oweh with someone who is on the same tier. The only outgoing piece of capital that wasn't recouped is the 2027 seventh-round pick.

Baltimore essentially made a lateral move at edge rusher and added Gilman for a future seventh-round pick. That's exceptional value.

Oweh and Jones have similar numbers on the year, even if Jones' numbers are inflated by his monster game against a depleted Chargers offensive line on Sunday. Here are how the numbers shake out, per Pro Football Focus:

Oweh has the slight edge in pass rush grade and pressures, but that is all inflated by his time with the Chargers. It's not like the Ravens gave up much production when trading Oweh as he struggled to produce in Baltimore before the deal. All four of Oweh's sacks are with the Chargers. In Baltimore

Jones now looks to do what Oweh has done with the Chargers and turn his Week 9 showing into more consistent production. Jones pressured Justin Herbert seven times on Sunday with two sacks. If the Ravens can get half of that production it will be more than what Oweh was doing.

The Ravens won the Odafe Oweh trade, but it doesn't make the Chargers a loser. Los Angeles desperately needed pass-rusher help and had to make a trade sooner rather than later with Khalil Mack sidelined at the time.

It's worked out fairly well for the Chargers, but it will likely work out even better for the Ravens.
