With every NFL team making massive cuts ahead of this past Tuesday's deadline to trim rosters down to 53 players—and, of course, all the different moves made in the days after each team set its initial 53-man roster—there are hundreds upon hundreds of players who failed to get past final cuts still hoping to land a job.
But those who failed to find a roster spot after training camp aren't the only ones looking for work, as there are still plenty of veteran free agents out there who simply never got signed by a team in the first place. One such example is former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Kyzir White, who started all 17 games for the Arizona Cardinals but has yet to put pen to paper on any type of contract for the 2025 season.
But the 29-year-old is hoping that will soon change, as Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that White was set to take a meeting with the Indianapolis Colts, who are seemingly looking to add some veteran depth to a linebacker corps that currently consists of Zaire Franklin, Joe Bachie, Cameron McGrone, and Segun Olubi.
Former Chargers LB Kyzir White works out with Colts
With second-year pro Jaylon Carlies starting the season on injured reserve after already missing seven games as a rookie, adding a little help certainly wouldn't hurt. And the Colts would certainly be getting a lot of experience if they were to add White to the roster.
Taken by the Chargers in the fourth round of the 2018 draft with the 119th overall pick, the West Virginia alum had played more safety than linebacker at the collegiate level, often taking on somewhat of a hybrid role. But once he arrived at rookie minicamp, then-head coach Anthony Lynn made him a full-time linebacker, and he immediately thrived, almost instantly becoming a fan favorite.
Sadly, a knee injury limited White to just three games during his rookie campaign, but he bounced back beautifully and saw his role get bigger and bigger with each passing season, starting seven games in 2019, 10 in 2020, and all 17 in 2021.
And that 2021 campaign was his best yet, as he racked up 144 total tackles, the most on the team and good for the eighth-most in the entire NFL, while adding three passes defended, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a sack.
But much to the dismay of Chargers fans, the team opted not to re-sign him after that career year and let him just waltz into free agency, at which point he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
After starting nine of 20 games for the Birds between the regular season and postseason and amassing 121 total tackles during their run to Super Bowl 57, a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in which he made four of those tackles, White hit the open market again and signed with the Cardinals, with whom he spent the last two seasons, starting each of the 28 games in which he appeared.
For his career, White has started 73 of his 92 regular-season appearances, tallying 615 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, eight QB hits, 2.5 sacks, 23 passes defended, and six interceptions.
If things work out in Indianapolis, White would be in for a little reunion, as the Colts will pay a visit to SoFi Stadium for a matchup with the Chargers in Week 7.
