Training camp could start rough for Chargers (but flip fast if this hits)

Some L.A. Chargers fans might be wondering why the team still hasn't gone out and re-signed Keenan Allen. Heck, other fans could be curious as to why this team simply didn't do more at the wide receiver position, altogether.

Because the wide receiver room is a little muddy right now, training camp might start out somewhat messy. We know Ladd McConkey is the no. 1 as it stands. That part is easy.

But, the return of Mike Williams should give him every opportunity to be the no. 2, right? It would only be right for the veteran to get that respect, and why shouldn't he? Quentin Johnston is still there, but he has been more or less an afterthought at times.

Johnston has had flashes after looking like a bust, but he's still not where the Chargers would like to see him, in a perfect world.

That would leave rookie second rounder Tre Harris no. 4 in the pecking order -- for now.

Tre Harris has an opportunity to flip the script at Chargers training camp

"Wait, you mean to tell me his performance at OTAs and minicamp doesn't automatically give him the right to step into the no. 2 role?"

Correct. That's the case, for now.

Harris is still a rookie, and Jim Harbaugh will do right by his veterans, until he cannot afford to ignore a special talent.

And, folks, Harris has the opportunity to showcase the fact that he is, indeed, a special talent. There's a reason he came to Los Angeles. He has similar traits to that of Williams and Johnston, but even as a rookie, Harris looks like he'll pan out better.

The combination of size and speed to take defenders deep is there. We've already seen it in his first couple of months in practices. Now, if Harris carries that momentum into camp, he'll have no problem clearing up the distorted picture that is the Chargers' wide receiver room.

In a perfect world, Harris busts loose in camp and leapfrogs both Johnston and Williams to become the go-to target after McConkey. If Williams and Johnston are the third and fourth guys in line, that's right where fans would be comfortable seeing them.

So, while camp might start out a little rough at the position, Harris has every opportunity to paint a clearer picture and, thus, put all of the doubts about that room to rest.
